I am a roboticist with an interests in making robotic fundamentals more accessible:
- education resources
- textbooks, such as Robotics, Vision & Control (3 editions) with examples in MATLAB or Python
- the QUT Robot Academy
- open-source software
- Python for Robotics, including robotic and machine-vision toolboxes, and block-diagram simulation
- robotic and machine-vision toolboxes for MATLAB (still available, but no longer supported)
- real-world robotic applications
My current roles include:
- Technical Advisor for LYRO Robotics (intelligent robots for the food industry)
- Technical Advisor to emesent (drone autonomy and mapping)
- Technical advisor to Green Forge Labs (solar farm maintenance and construction)
- Consulting in robotics and technology through The Useful Robot Company
- Distinguished professor emeritus at Queensland University of Technology Centre for Robotics (QCR).
My research is concerned with enabling robots to see, and the application of robots to mining, agriculture and environmental monitoring.
I am a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering, and a Life Fellow of the IEEE. I am currently on the advisory board of IEEE Trans. Field Robotics and IEEE Trans. Robotics & Automation Practice. Formerly, I was editor-in-chief of the IEEE Robotics & Automation magazine, founding and associate editor of the Wiley Journal of Field Robotics, founding multi-media editor and former editorial board member of the International Journal of Robotics Research, member of the editorial advisory board of the Springer Tracts on Advanced Robotics series, member of the board of the International Federation of Robotics (IFRR).
I was awarded the 2025 Engelberger Award for Education, and the 2017 Australian University Teacher of the year award.
I received my undergraduate and Masters degrees in electrical engineering, and PhD in mechanical and manufacturing engineering, all from the University of Melbourne. I’ve spent time visiting at Oxford, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), Carnegie-Mellon University (CMU) and the University of Pennsylvania.
